Whispered interpreting (chuchotage) is an alternative to simultaneous interpreting provided without interpreting equipment. This kind of interpreting is suitable e.g. for a meeting held in English, at which all meeting participants speak English but one. The interpreter takes a seat next to the foreign participant and as the meeting progresses, he whispers the interpretation into his or her ear.
The same rules apply to whispered interpreting as to consecutive interpreting. It is necessary for the interpreter/s to sit or stand on a place from which they can hear and see the speaker/s well. The maximum period of uninterrupted engagement of one interpreter shall be 50 minutes. After the lapse of this time period, the interpreter is entitled to a break lasting at least 10 minutes or must be replaced by another interpreter. The overall maximum duration of engagement of one interpreter shall be four 50-minute sections divided by breaks.
