Consecutive interpreting is subsequent interpreting: the speaker delivers a part of his or her speech, then pauses, allowing the interpreter to interpret the delivered portion of the speech. Usually, the speaker makes a pause after several sentences or short sections (normal consecutive interpreting) but individual parts of the speech can last up to six minutes (high-level consecutive interpreting). By high-level interpreting interpreters take notes as the speech progresses which function as a memory support.
It is necessary for the interpreter/s to sit or stand on a place from which they can hear and see the speaker/s well. In the case of consecutive interpreting, the maximum period of uninterrupted engagement of one interpreter shall be 50 minutes. After the lapse of this time period, the interpreter is entitled to a break lasting at least 10 minutes or must be replaced by another interpreter. The overall maximum duration of engagement of one interpreter shall be four 50-minute sections divided by breaks.
